Systemic Racism

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; (Gen 1:27)

READ:

  • In the US, a black man is three times more likely to be searched at a traffic light and six times more likely to go to prison than a white man.

  • If a black person kills a white person, he or she is twice as likely to receive the death sentence as a white person who kills a black person.

  • Black people serve up to 20 percent more time in prison than white people for the same crimes.

  • Black people are 38 percent more likely to be sentenced to death than white people for the same crimes.

  • The UK Racism at Work Survey stated that over 70% of ethnic minority workers stated that they have experienced racial harassment at work in the last five years, and around 60% saying that they have been subjected to unfair treatment by their employer because of their race. Almost half reported that racism had negatively impacted on their ability to do their job, and almost half have been subject to ‘verbal abuse and racist jokes’.

  • George Floyd: How are African-Americans treated under the law?

Revelation 7:9-12 The Message (MSG)

9-12 I looked again. I saw a huge crowd, too huge to count. Everyone was there—all nations and tribes, all races and languages. And they were standing, dressed in white robes and waving palm branches, standing before the Throne and the Lamb and heartily singing:

Salvation to our God on his Throne!
Salvation to the Lamb!

Mark 12:30-31  (NIV)

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these.”

Lord, Jesus Christ
who reached across the ethnic boundaries
between Samaritan, Roman and Jew
who offered fresh sight to the blind and freedom to captives,
help us to break down the barriers in our community,
enable us to see the reality of racism and bigotry,
and free us to challenge and uproot it
from ourselves, our society and our world. (John Bucki, SJ)
